I began collecting in the 70's when I purchased my first house. The only furniture I owned was a bed. I was disappointed with the furniture in the "new furniture" stores, where most of the pieces were not real wood. I started to search antique shops and antique shows and found the quality to be better and usually less expensive than the retail stores. One day I was out looking for something to use as a bar in my den when I happened to spot an old wooden ice box just like the one my granny had on her porch at the ranch. It was perfect, with several doors and shelves where I could store glasses and wine bottles and keep my ice bucket cold as well.
In the 80's and 90's I started doing antique shows featuring mostly jewelry, glass and small items. By then I was hooked. After retiring from my day job in 2006, I opened my shop, Antiques by Nancy, on 19th Street in the Houston Heights.
What I love about the antique business is that every day is a treasure hunt. What keeps me going are the wonderful customers that keep coming back and sending their friends.
Now I've expanded into furniture and larger items. Recently I created a new line of my own products, "Texas Chic by Nancy", where I repurpose old furniture, chandeliers, mirrors and decor by giving them update faux finishes. Below are some samples of my work.
